Designers and Builders Elevating Spaces with Outdoor Lighting Fixture Installations

A well-designed landscape lighting system does much more than provide a secure setting at night. With today’s technology, low-voltage LED systems, and stunning fixtures, illuminating outdoor spaces has become an art form.

For those in the design and build communities, outdoor lighting can set them apart and make a statement to their capabilities in the growing field of lighting design.

Here, we’ll explore some of the lighting techniques used in an outdoor lighting fixture installation to turn basic illumination into brilliant radiance.

Fixtures By Design

Today, there is a nearly limitless selection of fixtures designed for different purposes and aesthetics. One of the most popular techniques is hiding the fixture entirely, creating an almost magical illumination from an unseen source. Outdoor lighting has also transitioned away from bright white light to fixtures with low lumen outputs that cast a warm, natural glow.

Uplights

Uplights are installed at the base of unique architectural features, favorite trees, and other elements. This lighting can add elegance and dramatic silhouettes. When applied correctly, uplights can appear like natural light. Grazing techniques can bring out the textures in trees, stone, and brick.

Downlights

These lights can be mounted high on structures or landscape features like trees. They can also line paths or illuminate gardens. When using a focused beam of light, they highlight focal points, such as water features, statues, and seating areas. Diffuse light spreads illumination across an area, casting a natural, soft glow.

Paver Lights

In-ground paver lights lie flush with the ground for low-profile lighting within paving stones. These provide elegant lighting for driveways, walkways, and patios. Some resemble bricks, an ideal solution for those with brick hardscaping.

Path Lighting

When installed correctly, path lighting does much more than provide a safe passage at night. Positioned to create distinct pools of light, they offer a warm, inviting atmosphere. These light fixtures come in numerous styles, ensuring they add to the aesthetics.

Wall Lights

Wall lights are placed on ledges, countertops, and stairs, highlighting hardscape features while brightening the surrounding area, defining perimeters, and increasing safety.

Hanging Lights

Lights placed high in trees can create a moonlight effect, downlighting from the tree’s canopy and casting a moonbeam on the space below. This gentle and diffuse light provides a serene aesthetic.

Underwater Lights

Underwater lights create a mesmerizing ambiance and captivating focal points.

Boundary Lights

Another technique that expands your living space is boundary lighting. When installed correctly, a soft yet continuous wall of light defines the edges of your client’s property, making it look much larger in the evening while extending their living space.

Security Lights

Security lighting may consist of spotlights and floodlights, often tied into motion sensors. This sudden, bright light can deter potential intruders and is frequently installed at points of entry.
